This pedestrian crash in Illinois ended in tragedy
Illinois has consistently ranked among the states with the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the United States. According to the last available data, Illinois had a pedestrian fatality rate of 1.85 per 100,000 population. Factors such as higher traffic volume, increased pedestrian activity, and a lot of interaction between vehicles and pedestrians contribute to the higher risk in urban areas of Illinois.
The leading contributing factors to pedestrian crashes in Illinois include distracted driving, failure to yield the right of way, pedestrian error or violation, impaired driving, speeding, and walking carelessly. Both drivers and pedestrians have a responsibility to stay vigilant and avoid accidents. This is something we all have to do.
Drivers involved in pedestrian crashes may face legal consequences if proven to be at fault. In Illinois, a driver who strikes a pedestrian must immediately stop and remain at the scene, report the incident to the police, and provide necessary aid to the injured pedestrian.
