Fatal motorcycle crash in Illinois kills the rider

A tragic motorcycle crash in Illinois in Decatur killed the rider on Thursday, March 30.

The unfortunate crash happened when both vehicles were approaching Martin Luther King.

At the intersection of Martin Luther King and Eldorado St., an eastbound Harley Davidson motorcycle crashed into a westbound Chevy Equinox passenger side when the traffic light had just turned red.

Local police identified the Chevy driver as an Mt. Zion man of 62, while the Harley rider was confirmed as 52 year old Kevin Webb of Decatur. The rider sustained severe injuries in the crash and went to a local hospital, where he died. The Chevy driver escaped unhurt.

As of the time of the accident, the motorcycle rider was not wearing a helmet, and his license did not have a motorcycle classification. In addition, the police confirmed that the Chevy driver was not under the influence. It is not yet clear whether the rider was impaired.

In response to the crash, the Fatal Accident Investigation Team was dispatched to the scene and is investigating the crash.

We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends for their grief and sorrow.

This motorcycle crash in Illinois ends badly

Motorcycle accidents are more likely to result in death or life-altering injuries than other road accidents. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show that in the US, motorcycle riders are 28-29 times more likely to die in crashes when compared to car occupants. In addition, their chances of being severely injured are four times higher.

The lack of protection surrounding a motorcycle makes riding it responsibly even more vital than driving anything else. Motorcyclists should understand and accept their greater responsibilities for keeping themselves and other road users safe.

To begin with, the most significant action in taking responsibility is ALWAYS wearing proper safety equipment. It could save your life.

In the aftermath of a motorcycle accident, families often face long-term consequences. We all know losing a loved one is a devastating and life-changing experience. Even worse is finding out that someone’s negligence caused their death.
